Re: Share your opening sentence!

Sure, why not? "Hailey stood motionless in a dark, humid place, having no clue where she was or how she got there: Hailey was simply just there." Oh yeah, it also plays into my ongoing theme of the novel's flow mimicking the stages of life. This works for me, but I'd like it more if you w...

Re: Swearwords. US vs. the rest

Roots? Really? I've never heard that before in my life. Of course, I've never been to Australia either.

Re: Writer Conferences

I'm attending the Pikes Peak Writer's Conference in Colorado Springs, CO in April. It's a three day conference, culminating in a workshop with Donald Maass on Sunday. I haven't been to this one before, but I'm looking forward to it. Networking with other writers, agents, and editors can really charg...

Re: Are dialogue tags really that bad?

Adverbs and obtrusive dialogue tags are like twinkies. Sure, they taste good and it's fine to have one or two once in awhile. But don't think you can sit down and eat a box of them and not pay the consequences. They'll make you fat, and they will not sustain you. Said is like water. You can't live w...

Ink uttered dismally before scurrying off to stuff his head under a pillow. :-)

Re: What are you reading now?

Right now I'm reading Let The Great World Spin by Colum McCann. If you want to learn how to write clean, vivid, intelligent prose, he's one to study. Loved this description: Sad-jeaned whores. Perfect capture.

Re: What are you reading now?

As I mentioned in another post, I'm reading The Ghosts of Belfast right now. So good. A crime thriller with a great premise: the protag is haunted by those he killed as a member of the IRA. To get them to leave him in peace he has to carry out acts of vengeance on their behalf. But I just put down W...

Re: New writer needs reading suggestions

I'm reading The Ghosts of Belfast right now by Stuart Neville. Its a debut, but oh-so-good. It takes place in Dublin and Belfast. And grit? Oh yeah, it's gritty and urban and really well written. And it has ghosts like the title implies, but it's not trendy paranormal. Just really, really entertaini...
