Possibly of interest to folks around here, I've been doing sort of a cookbook of my tricks and tactics from about a decade as a book doctor:
http://thebookdoctorslittleblackbag.blo ... -blog.html
Might not be of interest to people just starting out or working on finishing that first book; this is much more about how to move a finished pile of pages from "almost" to "a bit better than necessary:"
http://thebookdoctorslittleblackbag.blo ... visos.html
But if you've written a book or two, or maybe a dozen short stories, and things feel like they're close but not yet there, you might look at The Book Doctor's Little Black Bag:

This week's post is about a way of getting tangled, dull, goes on forever dialogue to sharpen up and start driving the story:

And thanks for making this available, Nathan. Future updates will be just the post for that week.

it's almost a week-old now, so not sure if that still counts as "new" in today's super-fast world!

How do some writers create great characters, while others, even if an enormous amount of time is spent on them, create only flat, flavorless saltines?

Hi All,
Not a new blog post
per se, but a new blog. It's a group blog that I and a couple dozen other authors have put together to chronicle our the labor and delivery of our first books. Appropriately enough, it's called "Book Pregnant."
We are a mix of young and old, with genres ranging from YA, to chick lit, to historicals, to memoirs, to mysteries. We first came together on Facebook, but decided to expand our circle to the blogosphere. If you're interested,we can be found at:
http://bookpregnant.blogspot.com/.
We hope to see you there!

Jonathan Franzen shared his disdain for e-books recently. Here's my response.
