2013 Writing Goals

Post by dios4vida » January 22nd, 2013, 11:13 am

Does anyone have 'em? Here's where to share 'em!

Personally, my goal is to finish edits on my WIP and get it ready to query. (eep!) Summer would be great, but I'm thinking more like fall since I need to have my critique partner and some betas give it another go-through before I'm ready. Obviously I'm nervous about racking up more rejections, but I've got a good feeling this time around - maybe I'll actually get a manuscript request. Even if I don't get an agent, I would consider getting a manuscript request (my first!) a success.

Publish my next novel in June, draft the following one in July-Aug (publish Feb 2014), and another in November-Dec.

I tend not to set specific themed goals. My biggest goal of 2013 is: Don't Die.

I've got a 31 and a half year streak! XD
I'm on Tumblr!

The blog died...but so did I...and now I'm alive again! OMG.

I'd like to commit to just writing four days a week -for several designated writing periods this year- (and I don't care how much I write, just that I write or edit on those days).

And I'd like to find a writing partner to check in with briefly on those four days as that keeps me on task for at least opening my work up and moving it forward on a regular basis.

And, also with the writing partner, sharing process conversations at the end of the week for those writing periods, because that not only is enjoyable for me, but helps me sustain my practice, connects me to being in the work not just at the end of it.

I started off the year with some pretty lofty goals, but have since revamped them to be better suited to my family life. But here they are (in no particular order):

Write 10,000 words/month
Write 4 blog posts per month - not including guest bloggers & books I've read
Finish my current WIP - A Horse Named Penelope (YA Contemporary)
Rewrite my previous novel - The Phoenix
Edit Penelope & have 2+ CPs for it
Write Query for Penelope
Write Pitch for Penelope
Query Penelope
Have baby #3 (in late June)
Read lots of books for fun!
Plan for 2013 Nano
Participate in 2013 Nano
WIN 2013 Nano

So, still some pretty lofty goals, but the main one that had me chewing my nails was writing x amount of word per month. I started the year saying 20k, but realized with all that is going on in my life right now, I'm better off setting it at 10k and if I go over I can celebrate :)

Wow, guys, those are some amazing goals!! In some cases I'd be happy to achieve ONE of the ten y'all have listed.

And Kristie, congrats on the baby!

Finish editing by the end of February, at the very latest.
Get feedback from beta readers, work that in, get final draft done by the end of March.
Get my query letter out in April.
Not get my soul crushed during the querying process.

I have a few of them hanging around my head, but I have no idea how life is going to look this year. Here they are, separated by WIP.

White Echoes

1. Finish Draft 5. I have 30k to go.
2. Edit Draft 5 from beginning to end (or, do Draft 6)

Eau trouble AKA the French WIP

1. Finish the first draft. I have about 20k to go.
2. Submit this project to a mentorship program (deadline 1st March)
3. Revise the whole thing with or without the mentor.

Edingher

1. Replan the novel.
2. Write Draft 2 as NaNoWriMo 2013

Others

1. Start writing short/novellas. I want to get better at this length, too.

As you can see, I'm getting ambitious with my goals. The truth is that I have no idea what I'll do this year, in what order, how much time I'll have. After May, the way my life will head is a complete mystery (oooh, thrilling!) I'll do what I can! :)
