World Cup!!!

Post by Nathan Bransford » June 11th, 2010, 7:47 pm

Can barely contain my excitement for USA/England. Anyone else watching?

Not too optimistic, but hey, we beat Portugal in 2002 so anything is possible!

Right KG???

Oh, it's possible. Our odds are better than, say, North Korea's against Brazil. Plus, we have all that anger of the BP debacle to take out on them. ;)

Oh, I'm definitely watching as many games as I can. Olympics set aside, the Worldcup is the only sport event I watch with high interest (meaning that I do watch hockey and american football now and then, but I won't know a lot about who's who).

And since my country has no real team to speak of (Canada), well, I'm free to cheer for whoever strikes my fancy! My heart swings between Argentina and England. I'll have to settle that soon. ;)

In case life gets in the way? How about sleep...South Africa is many, many time zones away. My South Korean friends have a party planned...at 3:30 AM our time.

What a crazy first half!! It was looking like England domination, then USA started putting it together, and then WOW, ugly but we'll take it.

"Ugly" is... an understatement on that one. He might as well just wear a sign that says "Goat" in the second half. And maybe he should consider staying in South Africa. Any good real estate in the area? I'm guessing the fans back home are... a wee peeved.

I think you mean to say that it's lucky that Tim Howard was born in the USA.

Too right! His being named MVP for the match was well deserved. Over 23 shots on goal, and most of them were by England. He earned his money today.

Ending on a tie was a great result - although it looked for a few minutes towards the end that both sides were playing for a tie! LOL. We had a good laugh at my house over that one. (I'm American, so the kids and I were cheering for Team USA while my Brit hubby was all for England.)

Howard doesn't really matter that much. Don't get me wrong, the man is definitely good, but England were a bit off form. Much better form that other recent matches, but still naff. Milner was overly aggressive and not really doing his job, and Carra's been out of the nationals too long to be as effective as he can be for the Reds. Rooney was pretty visibly tired by the end, and Crouch was brought in a little too late I thought. Still think Darren Bent should have gone in Heskey's place; Heskey is mediocre-at-best. Bent lacks international experience, but was one of the best forwards last season and has pretty consistently been good. If England had been in a bit better shape, seen a few less bookings, I think they could have gotten another goal in during that second half. Green's mistake really was dumb luck for the USA. Really feel sorry for him, too. He is going to be raked over the coals through Hell and back by the press, mark my words.

I had hoped for England to go out with Argentina and South Korea with a victory after their first match, but a 1-1 draw isn't a bad result. This doesn't even vaguely halt my hopes England will take home their second Cup.
