"Even the way her hands held the glass, and she has beautiful hands, launched me into all kinds of imaginings, which I really didn't have time for because the moment we sat down, she started telling me about some new guy she was seeing, a trainer or something for a cadre of wanna-be never-be boxers."

From the House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski.

Extra credit: it was on the coffee table behind my laptop.

From The Hobbit (J.R.R.Tolkien): Some of them actually sat down and laughed.

Who knew goblins could sit down and laugh?

"Are you savages, then, thus to mistreat a lone wayfarer?"

It's from Tales from the Dying Earth, by Jack Vance. Really heavy going, hence it's been within arm's reach for about a year. I love his prose, but it's 700-odd pages long and I'm tackling it in tiny bites.
