On the intoxicating effects of a positive review:

Post by paravil » November 12th, 2013, 2:31 pm

Backstory: I briefly self-published my first novel through Amazon Kindle last year. I say briefly because I was embarrassed by meager sales and wanted to put my energy toward pursuing traditional publication. Anyway, during the time it was out there, it ended up on Goodreads. Today, in a moment of narcissism and boredom, I Googled my name and the book's title to find a glowing review on Goodreads that was posted earlier this year by a total stranger (someone who had presumably bought or gotten the book on free promotion and had just gotten around to reading it). It was, honestly, my dream review. It said all of the things about the book that I hoped people would say. Very encouraging. Perhaps encouraging enough for me to put the book back out there.

I'm sure some of you have experienced the euphoria too. So what practical effects did/do good reviews have on you and your writing?
