I would have to say William Faulkner, Jane Austen, Harry Potter, David Copperfield. I could go on and on.

jonathan lethem is indeed a fantastic writer. so is ann patchett. kelly link. john dufresne.

at least, these are some that inspire me. my copies of their books are dogeared and marked up. as i read i think "yes,i need to do that!" or "why didn't i think to use that type of detail?"

i think it is different for everyone. but if you want a book on HOW to go about writing, and what to do and not to do, i most highly recommend "the lie that tells the truth" by john dufresne. he is an amazing fiction writer, and an equally amazing teacher.
