I second Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. If he likes it, there are sequels.
And of course the Harry Potter series really is great. The third book, the Prisoner of Azkaban, is usually the hands-down favorite so if he's seen some of the movies / is familiar with the world feel free to read them out of order.
Personally, I grew up with the Hardy Boys, Alexandre Dumas, and Jules Verne. They're all classics now. You'll just have to find out what he likes and find a book in a genre that matches. Honestly, some boys are quite happy with a subscription to Car and Driver and isn't reading the main thing?
