While this is well-written, it just doesn't give me a picture of the MC, the time period, where it takes place or any of the things that might excite me.
Is he a rebel?
Is he going to enter some great conflict?
What is his status other than renting a cheap place from a landlord he doesn't like?
Why should I care about HIM?
What makes his story different from so many others?

These, to me, are things you need to bring out early in your story. Draw me in quickly.
