Black Triangle (revised)

Hello, everybody. I also posted this under Lost Cargo (I can't decide on a title). I'm trying to rewrite this so it reads more like jacket copy, plus covers the first chapter -- when a photographer witnesses the crash -- since I'm sending the first chapter with queries. I appreciate any feedback. De...

Re: Writer's bio confusion.

Thanks for the nice words, Leila. My gmail doesn't show formatting, for whatever reason. I gave up on gmail and decided to use a regular internet provider (Comcast, because they have an easy to read email address). I sent a few queries out last weekend, five by email and five by snail-mail. I plan t...

Re: Writer's bio confusion.

One website even said to tell people you have done freelance writing because you are submitting this MS and therefore you are a freelancer. Terrible advice -- I would never do that. What will you say if they ask where you freelanced? I absolutely agree! I just had to share that one to show the dive...

THE WINTER OF OUR DISCONNECT (a family unplugged everything)

What happens when mom unplugs teens for 6 months? (*she unplugged herself, too*) Beth J. Harpaz, Associated Press NEW YORK – Susan Maushart lived out every parent's fantasy: She unplugged her teenagers. For six months, she took away the Internet, TV, iPods, cell phones and video games. The eerie glo...

Re: How do you organize your queries?

That's the same face that shows up when you win the game Minesweeper... make it past all the mines and an Elvis-type smiley face with shades shows up. No thanks...

Re: How do you organize your queries?

I just entered Queryland ths weekend and sent ten submissions. You have some good categories. I'm using QueryTracker, plus my own spreadsheet. QueryTracker is handy, but all the little face icons throw me off. Once you register on the site, read the comments under each agent -- they include a few wa...

Re: Ira Glass on Storytelling - some advice we could all use

I love Ira! Glad you liked the videos. I do share my work. I kind of knew throughout the whole draft that I had flubbed a part of the plot, I just didn't know how to fix it then and I still don't. Although I think I'm getting in my own way now. So far the people I've had read it see the problem (th...

Re: Ira Glass on Storytelling - some advice we could all use

Hi, Sommer. I just watched all four videos... great, practical stuff that applies to all forms of storytelling. He's so down to earth. I love his radio voice, too. Thanks for putting them up here. Do you share your work? I email my chapters to someone, plus meet once a month with a small group. My g...

Re: Ira Glass on Storytelling - some advice we could all use

Since the beginning of the year there seems to be a little bit of doubt creeping in to some comments like - do I have time to keep writing, should I keep writing, am I wasting my time, when is it time to move on - and I've been thinking about this quite a bit because I've started to feel a lot of p...

Re: When to move on...

I agree with everything Hillary says, but... I rewrote my novel three times. The first version was probably awful, but now everything clicks, the plot, the characters, the writing. I'm about to query it with confidence. The key is how much the story haunts you. If you're really, really, really in lo...

Hilarious -- I loved it and laughed out loud! It's precious.

And ha ha, you got our snow -- we only have 2 inches here in rotten old cold Pennsylvania.

Re: Gmail queries and italics

When composing your gmail message there should be a thingy below where you type in your subject that says either plain text or rich formatting. My gmail doesn't show that -- it shows absolutely nothing. There are no instructions of any kind -- no boxes, words, nothing -- that will allow me to selec...

Re: Gmail queries and italics

I use gmail for my queries. Write whatever it is you're writing, paste it into Notepad, copy it and paste it into gmail, use gmail to add the italics back... Hi, cheekychook. Thanks for both comments and the good wishes -- and best of luck to you, too. The problem with gmail is I can't find any way...
