Re: Do love interest characters need to be sexy?

I would say definitely not. Just look at the story of Beauty and the Beast. I disagree...I know it's not true for everybody, but I used to know a chick that found the notion very sexy. Then again, she was kinda weird, and wanted her man to be built like Schwarzenegger with the brain of a poet-philo...

And then there's "A Clockwork Orange", "The Screwtape Letters", "Blackadder"...you're not the first and you won't be the last. To see at a glance how a few others have worked with this, I recommend http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/M ... rotagonist.

Re: First 500 Words of a Sci Fi Short

I'm definitely enjoying this. On the one hand, I'm rooting for him, but on the other hand, I'm eager to see what other groups he meets in jail; I'm hoping they've formed prison-gangs. ("Whatcha doin' in Rec Yard 5, Steve? This is Dave territory!") You will have to go into why the governmen...

Re: What pays your rent?

As I mention occasionally, I work in an office supply store; I mention it frequently, because I am very bitter. There's never been much of a job market in Pensacola, and I'm the only person I know that's had a steady job for any length of time. I'm up for a promotion at the moment--my first in almos...

Re: My WIP is now a webcomic: Commedia 2X00

Yep, that was one of the first things we worked on in my first good art class in high school, although instead of Snoopy, we used this hideous-looking line-drawing sketch Picasso did, so it wouldn't be such a familiar subject. Drawing what you think you're looking at is what messes up a lot of peopl...

Publishing as Online Serials: My Take

I spent a long time trying to be a novelist. I completed then shelved two novels, and was steadily working on two more that might have a chance in the market--or might not. I was getting really frustrated, having spent years working on this stuff, with my only feedback being form rejections from age...

Re: In the Land of the Super-Geniuses

I'm really glad everybody's liking this so much! I have a problem with my ideas being too weird for prose, but I think the emerging genre of post-cyberpunk is a good fit. It's stories about how technology takes over peoples lives and enslaves them and so on, but instead of the bleak, dystopian style...

Re: My WIP is now a webcomic: Commedia 2X00

"Twenty-X Hundred." I've been trying to figure out how to communicate this, but I haven't come up with anything besides occasionally referring to "The Twenty-Xth Century". While I admit I've been to art school, I don't feel like it affected my style much; I actually got in troubl...

Re: Weirdest Christmas/Holiday songs?

I can take Eartha Kitt's version of "Santa Baby", and when I have to, I can sit through the version by Taylor Swift or whichever knock-off of her that did it. But I've heard a version where there's a guy singing--no idea who it was, although it sounded a bit like Hootie & the Blowfish-...

Re: Should authors smile in their book jacket photos?

It's entirely to do with the tone of the book. Christopher Moore's picture for "Lamb": he's up to his nose in a playground ball-pit, wearing a cap and a startled expression. Alan Moore always looks like some sort of ancient bearded hermit, but I get the impression that that's entirely accu...

My WIP is now a webcomic: Commedia 2X00

I was on here all the time for a while there, but then I had to shelve my second novel in a row; my next was coming along okay, but when my laptop died I decided I was burnt out. I needed a change. Turns out: I was in the wrong medium. I'd heard from all you guys that while my ideas were cool, they ...

Re: My Malicious is too Cheesy

Two suggested solutions and one helpful guide: 1. When I'm having trouble with dialogue getting all stereotype-y or generic, I pick a voice for them. It might be a famous actor, a non-famous actor, a co-worker or relative--anything that fits the part. Then you decide what they're trying to get acros...

Re: Your Most Random Writer's Fodder Moment

I've been slowly building up a skit based around the worst customers we get at work--the ones that, for example, ask which product they need, and while you're trying to ask them a question to find out what they're after, they randomly grab something off the shelf and ask if that's it. The ones that ...

Steampunk Cyborg Vengence by Gaston Leroux

Yes, apparently 1923 had "Phantom of the Opera" author Gaston Leroux writing "La poupée sanglante", AKA "La machine à assassiner", about a man wrongfully guillotened for murder, then having his head attached to a robot that proceeds to wreak revenge on those who wronged...

Novelist Has Shitty World Plotted Out (the Onion)

Just wanted to share this article from the Onion. It reminds me a lot of talking to other authors, though, and I hope other people don't think this about me!
