Ever Just Take A Writing Break?

And I don't mean a day or two. I'm talking a few weeks, not really writer's block, just sort of a recharge the batteries period? I understand the risk of the longer a break one takes, the tougher it may be to get back into the swing of things, but there's a craving in me to relax, read a few books, ...

Re: Separating confidence from self-doubt

As long as self-doubt is motivating you, I suppose it's okay. But there is a fine line between where self-doubt can freeze you up to and keep your writing in your head instead of on the page.

Do you work on more than one book at a time?

Just curious, because I know there's no right or wrong answer to this (just do what you do, ya dig?!), but I'm wondering how many people work on writing more than one novel at a time and what their experience with it is? I never have, but I really want to try it. I'm worried about never finishing on...

Re: Agent wants to make edits? Yes or no?

Thanks.

I suppose I should have been clearer (apologies). She's not representing me as of yet. She had requested a manuscript and asked me about making edits while she is still in the process of reading it. That could be a good sign, that she's showing an active interest in the project?

Re: Agent wants to make edits? Yes or no?

She asked if she could edit down some sentences that she thought were too long.

Agent wants to make edits? Yes or no?

Nathan,

I have a manuscript out with an agent right now and she emailed me to ask if she can make edits. Are there any hard and fast rules regarding this one way or another?

Re: Writing Fight Scenes

What may help is watching real fights online and imagining what the people, I almost typed "characters" :) are thinking/feeling. Sadly, (or not, depending on your perspective), youtube has thousands of real life fight videos. Plus, you'll get a more realistic look at what fights are like i...

Re: Ask Nathan

Nathan, I have a publishing company question to ask you. Is it normal for a publishing company to require that an author buys a minimum of 50 copies of their own book (they recommend at least 100 to start) to sell on a mandatory tour? It feels like a scam, but they seem like a semi-legit company... ...

Re: Ask Nathan

Forgive me if this has been answered (and I suspect it has), but what's normal amount of time to wait before following up with an agent who asked to read a sample? Or do not at all?

Re: Ask Nathan

Nathan, What are your thoughts on gimmick/parody books, like Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and this new Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter book that's getting a lot press recently? Are you seeing more queries for mash up works like this and do you think this is...

Re: Rejection Stats

My newly revised query has gone 3 for 3. 3 Form Rejections. On one of them, all the agent had to do was address me before the form rejection, which means he typed out less than 10 characters, and he still managed to make two typos! I really wanted to respond, but you know, you got to take the high r...

QUERY: The Exciting Life and Death of The Amazing Henry

Any feedback is appreciated. I understand that a short story collection is a difficult sell, but hey, it's what I have for now. Thanks. --------------------------------- Dear [Agent], The Morelli brothers, Ernie and Vinnie, are not your typical pair of Mafia lifers. On one job they find themselves t...

Re: Online Literary Magazines

I'm biased as I'm in the process of starting up an online lit zine, but generally speaking it's very frustrating to me when people don't embrace the Internet and when someone thinks less of something because it's online, it reeks of stuffy elitism to me. The fact is that for me, as a writer, I'd muc...
