And once you're finished killing spam, you can bring me a whiskey on the rocks. For, um, my sheriffly duties.

Re: Bransford Blog Bracket Challenge!!!
I'm going with anti-basketball knowledge this year. So, I'll use my basketball knowledge to rationally decide the most likely winner for each game. And then I'll pick the opposite.
I'm so gonna rock this year.

Re: What are you reading now?
Just finished The Locked Room, by Sjowall and Wahloo (which was great), and am about to start Arctic Chill, by Arnaldur Indridason. Also finished Jacob Wonderbar. :)

I like Lamott's non-fiction, but I've never read any of her novels. Curious to see what you think of it.

It's on my TBR pile, and I also have a copy of Iron Council. I've heard so many good things about this guy, and I've read some of his non-fiction, which is incredibly sharp and interesting. I don't always agree with him, but it's always an interesting sort of disagreement.

Re: (Un)Realistic young character dialogue
I agree that it should be more about this particular seven-year-old rather than some generic seven-year-old in the abstract. But I think what might be tripping the readers is less the apparent intelligence and word choice of the child, but the rather archaic and formal tone. The use of "mother&...

Re: Books About War
I have to disagree with Steve. It's certainly harder if you haven't served, but I certainly think it can be done. Isn't that the beauty of the imagination? Isn't that part of why we write? Yes, there's a cathartic element, and a pedantic element (to share what we know), but there's also an explorato...

I'm with Margo. If you've already bought it, might as well read it. If you like it, you can look out for future books by Jobie Hughes and support him. And you can refrain from supporting anything by Frey if his actions bother you. Avoiding reading the book now only bothers you. It has no effect on J...

Re: History Longshot
Hey, there's gotta be a few history buffs here. I'm with Fenris on his point about the psychology of people. I'm not a big name and date sort of history reader -- I'm interested in the stories, in what makes people go tick and tock. Areas of particular interest for me: Roman history Medieval History...

Re: Are you more likely to buy a book that won an award?
Winning a prestigious award is certainly a mark in the book's favour if I'm considering it. It's not the be all and end all, but I certainly take it into consideration. I also scan award winners looking for books that appeal to me. I still need an interesting premise -- it needs to be my kind of boo...

Re: 10 reasons e-books might not eat the world
Ebook buyers spend 20% more then paper books buyers(which is interesting considering the price difference). This is a rather misleading statistic. Or, rather, there are other interpretations of the data. For one, bviously ebook readers will buy more books on average than paper book readers as only ...
