Re: Fifty Shades of Grey: what do you think?

I'm very sorry that I've offended anyone. :( I know it came across as a rant. But this is just how I've seen it. It scares me, and I caught part of the Today show when Dr. Drew was on, with my mom, and she was so disgusted by what was being described, that she actually felt sick and got up off the c...

Re: How long do you take to finish a draft/ WIP?

I just finished a first draft, for the first time. :D ~52K words. Keeping track of general statistics helped motivate me; on a little piece of scrap paper I wrote the chapter, the date, and the word count for that chapter. I started on March 11th and ended this afternoon. Not sure how long it'll tak...

Soylent Green.

Unless it's the person who just cut you off on the freeway.

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread

SQUEEEE!!!! Okay, so this squee requires backstory. On my recent Spring Break my father unintentionally gave me a fantastic plot idea. I kicked around, wrote a synopsis, and started showing it to my CPs. I also pitched it to my writing group. THEY LOVED IT. The amount of love they showed this book ...

Re: Developmental editors - how to cover the cost?

Thanks again, Poly. I'm guessing your real surname is "Syllabic," for being just as comprehensive and verbose as I often am in my responses and IMHO doing a better job of it. (Mine are often more like On the Road written on a sheet of two-ply Charmin... and the "platform" used fo...

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread

I've made it halfway through a first draft. A microscopic "squee" in comparison to most everyone else here but a wow for me. I do all my writing on a low-powered Acer Aspire One netbook, with a "lite" install of Windows XP that has the network drivers removed and no IE7 or Firefo...

Re: Best social-networking to enlist a collaborator?

This is a really good question. I've alittle picture book I've considered self-publishing, but I have no clue how to find an artist! If you ever find out, Rachel, or anyone has an idea, I'd love to hear it too! I actually located a couple of articles recommending against seeking out an illustrator ...

Re: Another great author, this time of children's books, gone.

I loved the Berenstain Bears too. My mother taught elementary school and had the whole series, even way back to when Brother Bear was an only child, named "Small Bear." He apparently had to undergo a name change when Sister Bear came along. I guess his parents weren't too forward-thinking....

Re: Your writing space

About the only space that I have as my own is the big bar below ZXCVBNM. ;) Other than that every room is shared simultaneously among more than one person (even the bathroom!), and I have very little to no real "room of my own." :( It's kind of really strange, the way I live, in that you l...

Re: Funny Typos

Ha! I can't remember any typos I did myself, but I sometimes like to read the funny things auto-correct does when you're texting. Here's a link of some fun ones: http://runt-of-the-web.com/4284082998 Ellen DeGeneres does a sketch on her talk show called "Clumsy Thumbsy" that features exac...

Re: Developmental editors - how to cover the cost?

Thanks, Polymath, for that advice and for the suggestion. :D This is the furthest I've ever gotten in working on anything, as of now I am now up to chapter 7 and ~35K words. FWIW I understand that the first draft is supposed to be just that; as "Papa" (or was it King?) once said, "the...

Lol, I read "Kilroy was here" and expected to find something from 1984. Not Orwell, but Styx's "Mr. Roboto."

Re: Funny Typos

Lol @ "cunning linguists," Poly  I'm assuming that was a tongue-in-cheek joke. I once took a writing course at a local comm. college. One of the participants/students was workshopping one of her fanfics (which is OK online, I guess, but probably not for a college-level Engli...
