Do love interest characters need to be sexy?
On my blog this morning, I am hosting writer Sarah Belliston. I was intrigued by her idea for a guest post in that she challenges us as writers to look beyond our first or even second inclinations to write characters in specific ways. What do you think...do love interest characters need to be movie-...

Take a good look at Nathan's post on this. He does a nice job of breaking this down.

Blogfests - yea or nay?
As I balance my time between writing, blogging, and the many other things I do in any given day, I am aware that I tend to not participate in blogfests. Some seem time consuming, others pretty fun.
Do you participate in blogfests?

Writer's block
I am sure all writers at some point or other have hit a wall with their writing. The difference between successful writers and those who wanted to be writers long ago has to do with perseverance. How we use these hitting-the-wall experiences (is most areans in our lives, really) has an incredible li...

These are all great things! My mother-in-law was just taling about a book she recently enjoyed partly because the scenes were so vivid. Description is key.

What do you do well?
A recent post got me thinking. It is tempting to focus on our writing struggles. And certainly we want to be aware of them so that we may improve upon our shortcomings. But when your creativity just isn't flowing and you've got a daily word count quota to fill, thinking about what we do well can go ...
Re: Titles
I brainstorm with some of the uber-creative people in my life. Braionstorming might not produce the actual title, but it will get my creativity flowing and by the next day, its there. Titles are important. Who wants to request a book at the library or ask the bookseller at B&N "Do you have ...

Re: What is your writing weakness? (Let's call this therapy)
My writing weakness would perhaps be spending too much time thinking about my writing weaknesses as weaknesses! We NEED to be aware of our shortcomings or areas for growth if we are to create the best work we can. Perhaps a good spin on this would be, "What do you do well?" Rebecca http://...

Re: Stereotypical Characters
Stereotypes or cliches are fine so long as they have twist. A main character needs to have enough to get and keep a readers attention. Backdrop characters are ok as stereotypes, in my opinion, because they are meant to blend into the backdrop. How can you take this character of course and add a twis...

Novel soundtrack?
Complete silence.
White noise.
Dave Matthews Band loud and clear.
Every writer has their own writing environment. Some use music to inspire their writing. Others wear earplubs in the basement corner "office".

Re: Prolouge Questions
Some seasoned writers like Orson Scott Card says never, ever write a prologue. Ever. Wolff's A Vintage Affair has a prologue that got me to read the rest of the book. I think it is essential to be sure you need a prologue in the first place. What is its purpose? Is there another way to convey inform...

How long?
As long as it takes to do it well. Pure and simple.

Re: Reading as writers
Holly, those must have been seven heavy boxes! Your Kindle is bound to be lighter. It is an interesting question particularly because I find great pleasure in reading as a writer. There are some whose work I have been following for years that are so masterful they seem to be able to bend language. W...
