Re: Does analyzing books ruin them?

I find that analysing a book ruins it for me. I'm too busy looking for the craft to immerse myself in the story. Just writing has taken away a lot of my enjoyment of books since I have become far harder to please, so now I try to set aside everything and just throw myself in the way I used to.

Re: Which Celebrity Would You Eat?

I wonder if people would be affected by pollutants and poor diet, much the same way that wood pigeons are supposed to be delicious, but nobody touches urban feral pigeons (which surely would have solved some pest control problems back in my public health inspectoring days). I think I would prefer a ...

Re: The "Random Quote" game

"Are you savages, then, thus to mistreat a lone wayfarer?"

It's from Tales from the Dying Earth, by Jack Vance. Really heavy going, hence it's been within arm's reach for about a year. I love his prose, but it's 700-odd pages long and I'm tackling it in tiny bites.

Re: Writing Sex Scenes

My crit partner attended a panel at ConCarolinas on writing sex scenes. I wish I could have attended too; apparently it was excellent. Some things she picked up:

Stay clear of -ing words. They are always embarrassing.
Dribbling and deflating are never, ever sexy.

Re: First round of edits - a long way to go!

My crit partner used to send me drafts every step of the way. It became a problem because I got burned out on the material and lost track of what I had read this time versus last time versus the time before that, and I ended up unable to contribute anything meaningful on structural issues. I would s...

Re: Do you work on more than one book at a time?

I can only work on one book at a time, although I will do a short story or two when a draft is away with betas. I find it really difficult to switch between my character's heads, which is why I'm reluctant to take on the suggestion to introduce a second POV to the one I'm writing at the moment.

Re: Positive exposure or professional suicide?

I can't honestly say I have a huge amount of experience to say whether agents/publishers would consider it a no-no, but it seems like the beginning of a good platform to me. If your shorts are interesting, they would hopefully drive interest towards sales of the longer works. Also, I have found writ...

Re: What Do You Write For?

Writing first drafts is fun. Writing short stories is fun. Shooting for publication, that's for money. Revisions and crits are slow and painful, rejections are worse, and there's no way I'd be enduring them if it wasn't for the outside chance of propping up my underperforming endowment mortgage a li...

Re: Speed Dating of a Different Kind: Choosing a Writer's Group

I'm biased by liking my writers groups, but my advice would be, go to one. Pick one that suits you, but definitely get out there and find one. The need for social contact should not be underestimated when you do something as isolating as writing. One of my groups meets in a small bar, and while it i...

Re: Do You Use LinkedIn?

I joined LinkedIn and tried very hard to restrict my links to the people I know in a writing context. I then watched in horror as it ignored the limits I had set and spammed pretty much everybody I had ever emailed. I know this because it even spammed my own work email address. I see enough annoyed ...

Re: Word Count?

Thanks Wordranger. :) It's out for its second round of beta at the moment, hence tinkering with the query letter while I try to avoid chewing my fingers off as I wait to hear.

Got to have something to obsess over. I often wonder if it's too late to take up competitive knitting instead.

Re: Word Count?

Word count gives me nightmares. My MS stands at at 71K on its third draft using word processor count, which I worry is too short, but using estimated page count would give me 85K, which would be just about perfect. I have no idea which one I should run with, but I really don't want to kill my chance...
