Oh, there are so many good ideas here. I don't even want to talk about them, but you've given me the idea for what could easily be a longish short-story, if not a series.
Thanks for the free idea! :)

Telling the Truth
The hardest part of writing a novel (for me) is telling the truth. No, I'm not saying that fiction is true. It is fiction. Made up. Imaginary. The world doesn't exist except in the mind of the novelist and, if he is very good and very lucky, in the mind of the reader as well. The hard part of creati...

Re: Revision of plot - ugh
Thanks, Jennifer.
I think you're righter than you know about the fact that the first one is the hardest because it's the first one, and hence is "novel." (I amuse myself with my puns.)
I"m going to take a bit of time off and think about something else.

Re: Revision of plot - ugh
And I was just telling my wife today, "You know, most of the writers I know are a little crazy." I exempted myself, of course.
Now, not so much.

Re: Revision of plot - ugh
First of all - thank you all for listening to my complaint and my very self-referential whining. The deal is - this book is your typical YA-coming-of-age novel. (OK,ironic, but it stems from panic.) The first dramatic crisis - the huge end to the beginning - is significant. And then there is the fol...

Revision of plot - ugh
The more I work on this novel (WIP) the more flaws I see. I threw away the middle third of the book because I realized it wasn't the story I wanted to tell at all. A YA novel that somehow became a courtroom drama. NOT the story I wanted. So I re-wrote a new middle which is much more satisfying, with...

Re: A painful but necessary book on writing
Interesting responses!
For me, since I'm getting only fluffy responses from friends, I'm looking for something a little deeper and more to the tune of the business world. I don't want "nice." I don't want violence. I just want that thing in the middle called honesty.

A painful but necessary book on writing
I searched in the forums, but couldn't find an entry for this book - Jessica Morrell's "Thanks, But This Isn't for Us" -- a book that will hurt you. It's like the anti-friend. Your friends will tell you how good your book is, how fresh and original and lively it is, how much of a sure thin...

Re: Writer Conferences
I'm trying to get others from my writing group to go. Most of them are sensitive to the costs (well, so am I), but I think I can get a few others to attend.

Re: The Introduction Thread
By day I'm a typist. But come the night and I turn into a writer . Full fell moon shines through my office window as I brood and peck, thinking of what happens next? and who is the actual protagonist? and can I balance a spoon on my nose while I'm tapping pencils on the desktop? I'm currently workin...

Re: Nominate Your Query for a Critique on the Blog
It’s 1952, and Henry Valentine is turning 13 in Windmill, Texas. Baseball is the love of his life, but he’s beginning to wonder about Peggy Henderson, the girl he meets each morning on his paper route. And there’s the problem of kids who don’t follow his rules as the Safety Patrol Officer at the cro...

Re: Semi-autobiographical Novel
Sure you can write from your own experience, but if I have to know you in order to understand or enjoy the novel, then you will have a limited audience. You have to find a way to make the people universal. Maybe you could do some freewriting to flesh out your characters. Write about what they did th...

Re: Writer Conferences
I'm planning on attending the Pacific Northwest Writers Association Writers Conference in Bellevue, Washington in August 2011. My goal is to finish my book to the point where it's ready to pitch by June 30 (pitch as in "present it to agents"; it's already in the "ready to be tossed in...

Re: How do you title a book?
The only thing I can say about titles is that I need one for the book, and I have to pick something that helps me during the writing, but I have to be careful that the title doesn't control the book. I mean, I get this idea, and I get a title, and that starts the book. But as I write and the story d...

Re: How do you title a book?
Oh, I wish I knew the answer. The title for my current WIP seemed to fit so perfect. (The WIP is still in edit/review mode.) I loved the title. When I shared the work with my writing groups, they all said "Sounds like a Regency romance novel set in the Southwest." Which it is not. At all. ...
