Re: Tumblr vs. Blogger
I use Blogger for my 'real' blog and Tumblr for fun (aka reblogging), and I would recommend doing it that way. I've noticed in my own Tumblr experience that the setup of the site breeds a mindset of impatience, so that I'm less likely to take the time to read a longer, more thought-provoking post on...

Re: NANOWRIMO~!
I am! My inner editor has squashed my productivity to zero over the past year, so I'm relishing the opportunity to lock him (yes, he -- I call him Inner Ed) in a closet and give myself permission to write junk. So after... ...winning in '08 with the first half of a legit novel... ...'winning' in '09...

I just had to pop in and say that I thought your description of the second relationship was adorable.

Re: Which book have you read the most number of times?
For me, the book with the greatest number of re-reads is The Hobbit. I think I've reread it five or more times. It's just so fun and easy to get into, and whenever I finish I want to start reading it again. After that is Little Women , and The Last Unicorn . The latter is my favorite book and closes...

Re: What Do You Cut?
I've discovered a new way of finding things to cut: read your work to someone who doesn't have an endless amount of patience. I have been reading my current WIP aloud to a friend of mine, and whenever I sense her getting bored, I find myself skipping chapters, saying, "I'll just tell you what h...

Re: How do you know when to end a chapter and start a new?
There are some structural principles involved for guidance. A chapter is a smaller dramatic unit than a novel, similar in structure to the whole novel, like a fractal tesselation of the whole. A chapter has a beginning introduction of a complication, middle efforts to address the complication, and ...

Re: LABOR DAY WEEKEND WRITE-OFF
Huzzah! This comes at just the right time for me!
My goal will be 7,000 words. (Considering I've averaged less than 10k per month over the past several months, I don't want to kill myself.) But, if I happen to get to 10k, I won't mind too much...
Good luck, all!

Re: First, second and third person p.o.v
Here is what I've found in my limited experience: a) Good first-person requires that you be in touch with the character and make his/her voice unique and enjoyable, and not just another version of your own voice. The beauty of first-person is that you get closer to the character than with third-pers...

Re: Teenage Writers?
I'm not a teenager anymore, but I wrote my first novel at 15. Ironically, it was my algebra teacher that encouraged me to write as a profession, even though I got "A"s in his class. He had chalkboards on three walls of his classroom and only used the one in front, so at alternating lunch ...

Re: Forum game: Random facts about you
First day on the forums and I'm already in the procrastination section... Whenever I'm really deep in thought, I wiggle my foot rhythmically (and incessantly. Oh, the adverbs). One time while I was sitting on my bed writing (with my foot wiggling 100 miles and hour), my mom came in and grabbed my fo...

Re: what is your aim of writing??
I write because I am always finding moments and feelings that I long to put into words. Or I dream up situations that won't stop bouncing around in my head. Or things just must be said. (This might have something to do with the fact that unless my brain is otherwise occupied, it's constantly narrati...

Re: Teenage Writers?
Huzzah for teenage writers! I actually decided to join this forum when I saw the link to this thread in Friday's This Week in Publishing post. I'm a homeschooled 16-year-old, and I've been writing seriously since I was about 14 (although I was writing not-so-seriously long before that). I participat...

Re: The Introduction Thread
Hello all! My name is Cherise and I have been haunting Nathan's blog for the past several months now. I finally decided to join when I saw the link to the teenage writer's thread in Friday's post (because, yes, I am one). I am working on writing my second novel and I know that publishing is still ye...
