Re: Can you write anywhere?
I think it's very important to cultivate the ability to write anywhere. this special room stuff can all too easily become an excuse to do nothing.

Re: How to know you're not a writer?
I hope things work out in your favor. I hear ya on the always being locked out of programs thing. I don't make ENOUGH money to be on low income housing here. I wish I was making that up. Good luck. Thanks. The Section 8 housing program hereabouts is a labyrinthe of red tape and hidden discriminator...

Re: How to know you're not a writer?
Where do you live, Sierra? I can tell you that while the disability program where I am will always deny you the first time, if you persist they will generally grant you benefits and no one checks up on you to make sure you're still disabled. I am blind though and the rules are a bit different for b...

Re: Critiques and Nathan's Sandwich Rule
The reason I stopped writing in the 90's was the unkind and negative critique my work received in a terribly ego-driven writing workshop. It was really traumatic, and hard to profit from since many of the comments were inconsistent and seemingly intentionally hurtful. Your comments about positivity...

Re: How to know you're not a writer?
Hey Sierra, I know I'm coming in with this comment a bit late but it's funny you mentioned EDS because I have that, too. Praise God I don't have the vascular kind, just the hypermobility/super weak joints/freakin' buttloads of pain kind. This July I got fitted for bilateral carbon fiber braces on m...

Re: How to know you're not a writer?
Ms. serriamcconnell, The depth of my well of despair is a private matter anymore, otherwise I'd share the litany of my many troubles, though I once wanted others to share in my miseries. Misery loves company, but good company soon departs from misery. I learned that lesson the hard way. Anymore, my...

Re: Critiques and Nathan's Sandwich Rule
A principal difference between Margo's two examples is attitude, one imperative, one subjective. They both make the same point about long backstory blocks. I don't know of anyone who likes to be imperially told how to write, at least not after grammar school. That kind of attitude tends to alienate...

Re: Critiques and Nathan's Sandwich Rule
I've recently adopted the Critters Workshop rules for critiquing. One of the most important rules, possibly the most important, is couch every criticism in the language of opinion rather than authority. Instead of saying: Three times you put in a long passage of info-dump disguised as dialogue. The...

Re: How to know you're not a writer?
They shouldn't be asking questions that are, for all intense and purpose, stupid? I'm sorry, Sierra, but this cracks me up. I know this feeling so well. I always want to say, "Whadda mean, you don't get it? What in the Mackinac Island fudge do you think the preceding sentence/paragraph/chapter...
