Re: NEW - Nominate Your Query for a Critique on the Blog
I already have a query on this forum, which has been critiqued (thanks, Nathan!) but he's said he's running low and has requested more submissions. So here's a second one -- From: Neil Larkins [contact info redacted] To: Jane Doh, agent Hello, I've perused several of the memoirs you've represented a...

Re: NEW - Nominate Your Query for a Critique on the Blog
I've been trying for over a year to write a query for this memoir. Again and again, and then I stumbled on this one that I'd composed about a year ago and had forgotten! From: Neil Larkins E-mail [REDACTED] Phone No. [REDACTED] To: Ms, Jane Doe, agent I understand you represent memoir. For your cons...

Re: NEW - Nominate Your Query for a Critique on the Blog
From: Neil Larkins Dear [Agent name] I've seen several books you have represented and you indicate that you welcome memoir. Following is a query for my double memoir, The Last Time You Fall: Three Weeks When Love Meant Everything and Acceptance Meant More. This is a double memoir, so also features t...

Re: NEW - Nominate Your First Page for a Critique on the Blog
Author: Neil Larkins Title: THE LAST TIME YOU FALL: Three Weeks When Love Meant Everything and Acceptance Meant More Genre: YA, Double Memoir Then it became obvious: Write this just as it happened and start here, the Freshman Mixer, the first social event of the Fall semester at the two-year liberal...

Re: OK to seek publisher for previously published work?
Greatly appreciated! :D This clears the way to revert to my fallback position, which was to publish it as an e-book. With two smaller works already on Smashwords, this will be a significant addition. And, should I decide to self-publish in paper, I can easily do that since I own the copyright. Thank...

OK to seek publisher for previously published work?
Hi, Nathan-- Back in 2004 I naively submitted my only major work to an outfit that billed itself as a "traditional" publisher. (They were anything but that and I won't say what the firm's name is, though I believe you and most readers here know who.) Back then I knew next to nothing about ...

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
You can do it. Your love for Theresa will keep yourself from making those kind of mistakes. It's a hard balancing act in life as well as in writing (I have the same apologetic compulsion and have had the same lack of understanding from people I love, but also acceptance from those who matter most)....

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
Neil Larkin : It's a problem of mine, too. My first chapter is rife with unneeded infodumps that I'll be sifting through for a while. Another one of my problems with this wip is the balancing act: Allowing the Teresa character to present herself as close as possible to the real Teresa without becom...

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
Neil Larkin : Nice introduction to your characters voice and inner/outer struggles, but I think some of the exposition could've been added in later. The scene is relatable and enlightening at the same time, the suspense draws me in, and I enjoy your writing style. Thanks, Avery. When to add exposit...

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
Neil - Your story broke my heart a little bit. To love and loose is a terrible thing (coincidentally, I know that all to intimately, and my story involves a man named Neil...). To tell Theresa's story this way seems like a beautiful way to remember and honor her. Best of luck to you. Thanks, dios4v...

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
I'll play. ;) (Incidentally, this is the WIP that I need some help with my tag line on - if anyone has any input, the thread's here http://forums.nathanbransford.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4027. Thanks!) --- I know the statue’s supposed to symbolize the spirit of the Cairumen people, but it looks ...

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
Now that I finally have time to sit down and read all of these, here are my reviews of newer entries: Neil Larkins – Of all the openings I’ve read in this thread (and I’ve read and commented on them all), this one is the one that I felt the most keenly. Maybe it’s because I can relate to your prota...

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
Outside the Copperhead Bar, Jeff Adams pumped another shell into the chamber of his shotgun. He approached the figure writhing in pain on the hard packed dirt that served as the parking lot of the establishment. It was difficult for him to believe the scrawny punk with the big belt-buckled wrangler...

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
[Man, I hate that: I was just about finished with my post when - bang! - "Web page has expired" Lost it all. Try it again.] Here's my WIP, though not my only one. It started out some eight years ago as a completed novel that I submitted to a POD publisher. I liked it enough, but like all a...
