Re: Does a Novel Need to Have a Moral?

Yes, and perhaps help the storyteller find a thread that runs through the story?

Re: When should you start marketing your book?

I was told that marketing can exist without promotion, but promotion cannot exist without marketing. Marketing is selling yourself, whereas promotion is selling your book. I've been trying to do both with social media and my website, but it's a struggle, that's for sure.

Re: Define "First Five Pages" length

Surprised this didn't attract replies. It's two years old now, of course, but "the first 5 pages" is, in my opinion, a critical element of a query. I've found advice on the Internet that says most agents aren't looking for an excuse to reject every query that comes into their world. But wh...

Re: Does a Novel Need to Have a Moral?

I agree that we shouldn't write stories with the intent of imparting some moral or lesson to our readers. But stories can leave something for readers to take with them into their own lives. Whatever that is, it shouldn't be annoyingly obvious. That said, here's my take on what a story can do... Stor...

Virgin Novelist

Forgot I had joined this forum. My apologies. Finally got my novel finished. Whew! Spent weeks fine-tuning my query but only one form rejection and several silent rejections (no reply after several months). But I'm still encouraged by the possibility that someday I'll find an agent who is interested...

Alpha & Beta Feedback for Apocalyptic Novel

Would like Alpha (writer-oriented) and Beta (reader-oriented) feedback for my apocalyptic novel. The setting is the near future when high altitude EMPs (electromagnetic pulse) zap the world back to the dark ages. The story focuses on the courage and resourcefulness of survivors who face a world they...

Re: Seeking beta readers interested in family memoir

You received no replies and it's been several months since your post, but I'd be willing to give you some alpha (writer-oriented) and beta (reader-oriented) feedback. Can't say I'd be willing to dig through all 99K words and I've only written short memoirs (portions of my life), not lengthy autobiog...
