Re: YA Fantasy - First 500 Words

I'm a little confused about what qualities are dream-like or vague! Could you elaborate a little bit for me, Anobile1? :) Thank you! Hmm... I'm not really sure how to elaborate. Calling it dream-like and vague is probably a little inaccurate, I have to admit. Lets see... it lacks a sense of... imme...

Re: YA Fantasy - First 500 Words

First of all, the first paragraph doesn't grab me. It feels a little awkward and dream-like. It's hard to tell what's going on, yet there's a lot of specific details. The details are good, but it might be good to balance them with clearer action. I's also say this applies to the rest of the excerpt,...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

A new feature (not sure how often it'll be yet): Questions for Readers. Can you pick up a new book you've never heard of and jump right it, or do you have to know what you're getting into? Come comment and discuss.

Re: Can you write anywhere?

I can write anywhere (so long as it's relatively comfortable), but only when there's no chance of anyone interrupting me. Planes are great (unless my mom is with me), and the middle of the night is (unfortunately) great. Too bad the latter has completely thrown off my sleep schedule...

Re: Do dragons and magic always = fantasy?

Thank you for the answer! I thought that was probably true, but unfortunately my novel doesn't feel like science fiction or fantasy. I don't suppose it would be possible to call it Literary or Commercial Science Fantasy?

Do dragons and magic always = fantasy?

My question is basically what's in the title: if a novel has dragons and/or something resembling magic, does it have to be classified as fantasy? In my case, my novel takes place on Earth and the dragons are created with genetic engineering. The magic has a somewhat scientific explanation and most o...

Re: On the friskiness of language

I think Scottish Gaelic (and presumably Irish Gaelic) is great for this... Oh man, Gaelic. I wouldn't say it's the best sounding language (though it's not far off), but it's by far the coolest. There's a legend about Gaelic being the universal language for Europe a few thousand years ago. My lingui...

Re: How many books do you read per week (or month)?

I read about 8-12 books a year. If I was always reading something, it would be a lot more, but I've always had a hard time starting a new book, so something has to sound really good to get me to take the plunge.

Re: Speculative Sci/Fan Query - FREE TO FORGIVE

A big thanks to everyone for all the feedback! Quite a few of you seem to think it sounds like a good book too. *dances in circles of joy and relief* Re-writing this thing took a lot longer than I'd expected. Luckily, I don't dislike writing queries. I actually enjoy it, though after spending so lon...

Wow, thank you! You really gave me some good options for how to improve this thing, Tomioka. And thanks to both of you for saying it sounds like a fantastic book. I hope agents agree. ^^'

Speculative Sci/Fan Query - FREE TO FORGIVE

Second version is on page 2 Phew, it's stopped being hot where I live so the summer blues is wearing off. Time to get back into writing! So, after spending a few hours reading Query Shark and other stuff about queries, I was once again inspired to work on my own query. This is the best version I've...
