Re: Fairytales for Wilde Girls

Hello all!~ I just thought I'd give a brief update on how Fairytales for Wilde Girls has been faring since its Australian release in early June! I've just sold the Russian rights to AST, which has been very exciting. The critical response has been overwhelmingly positive, and I've actually been aske...

Hello Bransforumers! :D My debut novel, Fairytales for WIlde Girls , will be released by Random House Australia on the 1st of June!! Here's my cover, which I love love love : http://25.media.tumblr.com/ebc407de2bc478af7e0f2de7160e65f9/tumblr_mlccaahfYO1rng3hko1_500.jpg It's a pulpy little slice of Y...

Re: What's wrong with it, please be critical

I actually strongly disagree with boatbuilder's appraisal, and I think this query's really good. The premise is solid, the threat to the characters immediate, and it's easy to try and imagine where the story might go. I'm actually wondering about your word count, since you don't mention it, and that...

Re: Females Dominate in YA?

Shipple's got an example of a male/androgynous pseudonym in her signature! As to the questions posed, I'm not too sure. But remember when VS Naipaul said the ladies write 'feminine tosh'? Try this quiz and see if you can pick out the 'gender' of a paragraph! http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/quiz/2011...

Re: Is this idea good & writing contest

I'm just not experienced and I don't even know if I edited it right! My parents won't read it, I dont have money to pay an editor on account I dont have a job....... among other things. Any ideas? You've hit the nail on the head, so to speak. You don't really need to spend money to become a good wr...

Re: CLOCKWORK IN E MINOR (fantasy)

I don't have a whole lot to add except for the fact that I think your book sounds excellent! I'm sure someone will snap you right up. :) The only real problem with this pitch is its lengthiness - I really like that the language you've employed seems like it will be reflected in the book, but sometim...

Sierra! Long time no see! I'm sorry you've had such a rough time of it, but I'm glad you're writing again. And I remember that you're pretty much a consummate pro when it comes to polishing/editing/a.k.a the 'hard slog' bit of writing. I can't offer any advice for self-publishing, since I went the tr...

Re: QUERY: MG/YA Urban Fantasy - no vampires/zombies/werewolves

I completely missed the genies! Okay, so. The antagonist spirits still seem to have aquatic themes, being associated with environmental issues, and since the siblings are underwater, I thought they were as well - I actually thought the were the 'deadly sea creatures'! I thought you were going for a ...

Re: QUERY: MG/YA Urban Fantasy - no vampires/zombies/werewolves

Very pretty writing and beautiful names. This query's pretty much there, if a little dense. I only have minor quibbles, really - I wouldn't reference genies in the first line if that's not really here nor there. Saying it's 'no vampires/zombies/werewolves' when it's about mermaids sounds somewhat co...

Perfect writing, beautiful lilting voice, and a precursor that draws you in while simultaneously summarising the entire story. Similiar to the Star Trek monologue, if only in a roundabout way.

Re: Characters with accents

I think Hagrid is the absolute best example of the 'written accent' trope. "Harry - yer a wizard." That's the quote from the book (the more famous version, reversed, is from the film). And everybody knows what Hagrid sounds like. It's gruff, but it's still English. But oh my gosh, Joseph t...

Re: PRINCESS OF SWANS -- YA Fantasy

Better! I'm going to disagree with writersink here (sorry!!), because I miss the suggestion of Feyana's scarred face. It may not add to the 'story', per se, but it's evocative. I can name very few novels which feature disfigured main characters. It also serves the purpose of making the king seem les...

Re: PRINCESS OF SWANS -- YA Fantasy

Excellent! I love the idea. Princess on a dangerous journey to marry her enemy and end a war. Perhaps indicate that the 'enemy' is an actual neighbouring country (which I assumed) because it's never actually stated for sure. Personally, I'd drop the allies, in favour of mentioning how Feyana feels a...

Re: Looking for Literary Agent for Coloring Book

I wouldn't classify a colouring book as a children's book, unfortunately. I think you're much better off going straight to publishers. You say it's relevant to what is taught in current classrooms, and that Scholastic has similar projects - is there a specific imprint or vehicle at Scholastic or edu...
