My Favorite Mistake
A few weeks ago, I wrote an email to a good friend when I was exhausted and upset. Last week, when I decided to write her again, I reread the first email to refresh my memory as to what I had and hadn't told her about a particular incident. And there I saw it: "it's" instead of "its.&...

Re: How do your reading habits influence your writing?
I read a LOT of history, and that definitely comes through in my fiction. The lineages of my characters, even my supporting characters, are very important to me. I like to think that I have a pretty good idea of their histories going back at least a century or so, three or four generations, even if ...

Re: SYMBOLISM - RECOGNIZING & BUILDING
I so agree, Mira! Isn't it fun to go back and read old stuff and discover symbolism your subconscious put in? Things you weren't even aware of as you were actually writing?Let your unconscious take care of the symbolism.

Re: When Should You Feel Comfortable Calling Yourself a WRITER?
Anyone who loves writing should feel perfectly free to refer to himself as a "writer." Now, "author," that's a whole different story (pun intended)...

I couldn't agree more. It's just... unwieldy.Visually,the double 's' seems cumbersome.

Re: What are your pet peeves about your own writing?
Oh, I'm terrible with em dashes. My agent made me go through my latest manuscript and replace most of them with semicolons. Part of me is embarrassed by it, but part of me feels that it is my natural way of writing. Also, there's smoking. It is a bad habit in both my real life and my writing. I simp...

Wow. I must say, sitting here in Chicago, with sirens blaring outside my window, I'm quite envious. Hope you had a great time.

Quiet, always. I just can't concentrate with music on. But music is a great inspiration to me at other times.

I do agree with Quill, however, that it should be brief. Be upbeat and positive.

Re: Eh... Author bio?
Tell them about your life, Blanche. Tell them about the art and the music and everything else that makes up who you are. Don't assume that your lack of writing credentials or a degree will be a deal-breaker for all (or even most) agents. Turn it into a plus by representing yourself as someone who is...

Mira is absolutely right. There is no obligation here. Agent #1 could have offered representation at any point in this thing, but she did not. The OP should feel completely free to choose either of these agents.
