Re: About Controversialness for 8-12 readers.
Are you sure you really want the story to start out as a middle grade book and end as adult? Or do you want a story where the MC starts out as a kid and by the time its done he's an adult? Two totally different things. You CAN have an adult book with a younger MC. (Think <i>"The Lovely Bones&qu...

Re: The Little Black Box - Urban fantasy query
I have to say that I agree with most of the things said by the others except I DO think the line about the werewolves as allies that want her dead works. That is, if the thinking goes along with typical lore that werewolves and vampires are natural enemies. Perhaps if you tweak it a little to sugges...

Re: Help! My novel is on life support!
Another thing that might help is to not worry about whether the story line would work for anyone else. Finish the story you set out to write first...then worry about fixing holes or making more plausible motivations and/or outcomes on the revision side of things. If your novel is character driven, t...

Ha! I've done that a couple of times myself. I figure if it's good enough that I thought of it twice then I most definitely need to leave it in...but probably only once.

Re: Ups and Downs
I hear you, Ken. I was flying high when I got a partial request a couple weeks ago. When I got the rejection back a week ago, it was a pretty low point. (Though she did tell me the idea was highly marketable, it just wasn't for her) Luckily for me, I'm too stubborn -- or too stupid -- to get stuck i...

See, I would have been one of those people shaking my head saying "Uh-oh, Nathan made a boo-boo". I'd have gone with another phrase too.

Re: How to categorize my work???
It's a paranormal romance if the story revolves around the relationship between the two characters and happens to have a paranormal element to it. As long as (and this is the part I didn't know at first)the story ends with a happily-ever-after or a to-be-continued upswing. Romance folks are VERY str...

As far as my Nook goes: -- The only drawback to it, IMO, is that it takes a full minute to turn on (I'm impatient) ... after that it's super fast. -- It only takes 1-2 seconds for the page to turn (no more time than it'd take me to turn a page in a real book) -- For the most part the touch screen op...

Words I Can't Stop Using
I'm sure we all have them. Those words that we know we use FAR too often in our writing. Most of the times we can pick 'em out during revisions, and sometimes we need them pointed out to us by others. Just for fun, let's put together a list of words that we can't stop using in our free writing, even...

Re: NEW J K ROWLING IS AUSSIE
It is definitely motivating on the writer side of things. The whole never-give-up-no-matter-how-many-rejections-you-get thing. I do worry though, when the industry types (this goes for movies, music, television -- not just publishing) try to predict the next so-and-so. Sometimes hearing that type of...

Re: How did you decide the genre?
My suggestion is you call it paranormal women's fiction , and let the agents worry about whether it should be classified elsewhere. That would be my guess. You'll probably find more agents to query if you go with paranormal romance , but if you really aren't comfortable with that, then I think women...

I just bought myself a Nook last night, so I might be able to help -- or at least give you my take on things.

Mary, as long as you can write it in first person I'm thinking you should probably be good to go!
This is a pretty neat idea. I'll have to see if I can come up with an entry.

Goodness gracious. Maybe you should put on your own query clinic; getting so many requests you can't keep track of them ;o)
Congrats on both though!

Re: Time to Fess Up - How Long Is It Taking You?
I'm finding it takes me 2-3 months to write a first draft. The revising stage takes a little longer, about 3-4 months. I admire those of you who have spent longer working on your drafts (for whatever reason). It takes a lot of dedication not to give up on a draft when it takes a significant time spa...
