Re: James Joyce

Try Dubliners, which is wonderful and very accessible. Nobody can get through Ulysses. You're not alone. But Dubliners is beautifully written. It's basically a series of short stories--each with an epiphany. The stories aren't heavy or intellectual.

Re: MOCKINGJAY - spoiler edition

I'll admit I skipped a lot of pages because I got a little bored with the action/war scenes, so I might have misinterpreted the ending. But I think Katniss was fed up with being manipulated by everyone--and that the supposed good guys --the Rebels--weren't so good after all (Coin etc). I liked Katni...

Re: Internships

I recently got laid off and am looking for another job in publishing. I'm using the Indeed.com site and I've noticed there are a TON of internships available right now in NYC. So college students or others in NYC area who want to break into publishing, you can have your pick--from publishing compani...

Re: The Reading Room - New Book Social Networking Site

I like library thing because you can put up a profile, your own person library with covers and all kinds of tags, there are lots of groups, you can get free review copies (though they go fast)--lots to see and do. Check it out...www.librarything.com. It helps me keep track of the books I read. Also,...

Re: 10 reasons e-books might not eat the world

I agree that ebooks won't take over the world. The novelty has definitely worn off for me. I only use my e-reader occasionally now. Yes, for big heavy books, it's convenient, but for most paperbacks, I'd prefer to add a bit of weight to my bag and not have to worry it the damned device is charged up...

Re: likeability factor (Mad Men)

I know Don Draper has done some bad things, but I like him--there's a depth to him and his backstory is so interesting (mother's a prostitute, etc etc). I thought he seemed a bit too harsh in the first episode of the new season, but I imagine it will seesaw back and forth--because that's the way he ...

Re: "Boy books"

Nathan's novel sounds like a good example of a boy book--sci fi or adventure, boy characters/maybe some gross stuff/fast-moving etc Girl books are thicker, sometimes harder to read, usually more complex, have girl characters , about relationships etc Girls are generally better readers... My boys iik...

Re: Procrastination vs. Writer's Block

I often have this problem and I'm not one of those writers who can write X number of words a day, though I've tried. Some ways around this are jotting down ideas for the next chapter, bits of dialogue, description, or whatever comes to your mind. Let it percolate and maybe do research for good detai...

Re: Ups and Downs

I recently received a rejection for a full an agent had requested almost exactly a year ago. I had marked it in my file as "MIA," which basically means the agent isn't interested and I probably won't hear from him/her. I do believe in querying in batches, but don't wait to hear from everyb...

Re: PREDICT THE NEXT BIG YA GENRE

I don't read or write YA, so this is more of a parlor game for me. But maybe the next big YA genre will be reality-based, instead of paranormal--but not so edgy or dark--more like the TV series GLEE--fun, quirky, yet with some emotional depth etc. Or perhaps YA historical fiction might come into its...

Re: What are you reading now?

I am reading THE SHADOW OF THE WIND by Carlos Ruiz Zafon--it's an international bestseller but I'd never heard of it. A friend insisted I read it--it's good...set in Spain after WW11, well written, mysterious, with a little magical realism or something like that going on--usu. can't stand this kind ...

Re: Funniest book you've read?

Lad lit and chick lit novels can be pretty funny....lad lit: SIDEWAYS, HOW I BECAME A FAMOUS NOVELIST, THE FROG KING etc etc. I can't think of any chick lit examples off the top of my head, but some of these have made me laugh out loud as well.

Re: What do you "do"?

I've worked in publishing, in libraries, as a freelance proofreader, and now I work for a book printer. Not sure being so close to all this book stuff is good for my writing, but I do read a lot. My job isn't stressful--I think that probably helps me as a writer--I can daydream a lot--and it's only ...
